DoT to take action against telecom operators failing to meet deadline for implementing full MNP

March 31, 2015

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has stated that it will take the necessary action against telecom operators if they fail to meet the deadline for implementing full mobile number portability (MNP) of May 3, 2015. According to DoT, sufficient time of six months was given to telecom operators to implement full MNP.

At present, MNP allows subscribers to change mobile network while retaining their number in same telecom circles. The full MNP will allow subscribers to retain their mobile number in any part of the country even if they change their operator or shift from one city to another.

Recently the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) had approached DoT stating that the telecom operators might not be able to meet the deadline due to technical and coordination issues faced by them, along with delay in the notification rule of full MNP by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. COAI had therefore requested that a committee be formed which can coordinate between private telecom companies and state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) for conducting networks tests to facilitate full MNP in time.
